INTERVISTA – JULIAN PERRETTA: “Voglio raccontare storie. Connettermi con le persone.”

Inglese con origini italiane, 25 anni, Julian Perretta è senza dubbi una consolidata promessa del panorama pop internazionale. Nel 2011 esce il suo primo album “Stitch Me Up” prodotto da Jamiroquai. A 17 anni Mark Ronson e Amy Winehouse lo chiamano in un tour e l’anno successivo Beyoncé lo invita come ospite speciale per il suo “I Am” Arena Tour. “Miracle”, il suo ultimo singolo, è già un successo mondiale.

Abbiamo conosciuto e intervistato in esclusiva per Doyoulike.org, Julian Perretta.

– 25 anni appena compiuti e già il tuo curriculum è ricco di soddisfazioni. Hai lasciato la scuola a 15 anni per intraprendere il tuo percorso. Quanto ha influito questa scelta? / You have just turned 25 but your curriculum is full of satisfactions. When you were 15 you left school to follow your own way; in which way this choice influenced your life?

Non ho mai rimpianto di avere lasciato la scuola. Sono certo che se fossi rimasto la mia vita sarebbe stata completamente diversa. Non mi sono mai sentito parte della scuola e la musica è sempre stata la mia vita. Ho lasciato la scuola ed ho cominciato ad esibirmi in bar e ristoranti e a lavorare in studio. Se potessi tornare indietro non cambierei nulla! / Leaving school I never regretted. If I had stayed I am sure my life would have been completely different! I never fitted in at school and music was always my life. I left and started performing in bars and restaurants and worked in studios. If I could go back, I wouldn’t change a thing!

– Nel 2011 esce il tuo primo album “Stitch Me Up” e sempre nello stesso anno realizzi un totale di circa 107 esibizioni. Preferisci una vita in tour o una in studio? / In 2011 your first album,”Stitch Me Up”, was published and in the same year, you made around 107 shows. Do you prefer to live your life in the studios or in tour?

Mi piacciono entrambe ma sono due esperienze completamente diverse. In studio sono da solo con i miei pensieri e lascio fuori il mondo. Mi immergo nelle mie esperienze e memorie e scrivo storie con loro. Sul palco prendo l’energia dal mio pubblico. Credo che essere in tour sia un’esperienza fortissima ma amo anche stare in studio. /
I love both, but they are completely different experiences. In the studio I am alone with my thoughts and completely leave the world behind. I go into my experiences and memories and write story’s with
them. On stage I take the energy from my audience. I guess touring is a much bigger rush. But I love being in studio too.

Quanto è stato emozionante per te condividere il palco con questi mostri della musica mondiale? E cosa hai portato con te da queste esperienze? / When you were 17 you joined Mark Ronson and Amy Winehouse on a tour and, in the following year, Beyouncè invites you as a special guest in her “I Am” Arena Tour. How was your experience with these great artists of the worldwide music? What you carry with you after these experiences?

Ho imparato quanto bisogna lavorare duramente in questo mestiere. Ho imparato che se voglio avere successo devo completamente dedicare la mia vita alla musica, proprio come Mark o Beyonce hanno fatto. Ho imparato così tanto da questi due artisti e non credo che sarei potuto arrivare fin qui oggi senza l’influenza che essi hanno avuto su di me quando ero un ragazzino. / I learnt how hard you need to work to make it in this business. I learnt that if I wanted to succeed I had to completely devote my life to music as Mark or Beyonce have done. I learnt so much from both of these artists. And I don’t think I would be here today without their influence on me at the young age.

– Cosa trasmettono, a livello di testi, le tue produzioni? / What do you want to communicate with the lyrics of your works?

Voglio raccontare storie. Connettermi con le persone. “Miracle” è davvero la mia canzone per le persone, per gli altri. E’ meno personale e più universale nel suo messaggio, più di altre precedenti canzoni. / I want to tell stories. Connect with people. “Miracle” is really my song for people, for others. It’s less personal and more universal in its message then my previous songs.

– In cosa risiede, a tuo parere, la ricetta del tuo successo e di un ampio seguito? / What is the recipe of your great success?

Duro lavoro senza pensare di essere migliore degli altri. Mia madre mi ha sempre insegnato ad essere modesto e a non pensare di essere troppo per fare qualcosa. Mi ha sempre insegnato che ci sarà sempre qualcuno che ha lavorato tanto per costruire qualcosa quindi, non smettere mai di migliorarsi. Questo è il mio motto. / Hard work and never thinking your better than others. My mother always taught me to stay humble and never think you are too good to do something. She taught me that there will always be someone who will work harder for it than you will, so never stop bettering yourself. That’s my motto.

– Quali sono i tuoi storici riferimenti musicali? / Which are your historic music references?

Sono cresciuto con un grande background musicale. I miei genitori avevano una amore straordinario per il rock ed il soul britannico. I miei nonni, genitori di mio padre, mi hanno fatto conoscere la musica italiana quando ero davvero giovane e l’ho adorata! Dean Martin o Frank Sinatra sono stati i primi veri cantanti per i quali ho perso la testa. Da qui, Led Zeppelin, Van Morrison e James Taylor risuonavano sempre in casa o in macchina. / I grew up with a really great musical background. My parents had a wonderful love of great British rock and soul. My grandparents on my fathers side introduced me to Italian music when I was very young and I loved it. Dean Martin or Frank Sinatra were the very first singers I fell for. From there Led Zeppelin, Van Morrison and James Taylor were always playing at home or in the car.
